Series Prefix (First Letter)

The first letter(s) of the motherboard model indicate its target usage and chipset family:

  • X – Workstation and high-end server motherboards.
  • H – High-performance server motherboards, optimized for enterprise workloads.
  • B – Embedded and compact motherboards designed for edge computing.
  • C – General-purpose server motherboards with a focus on scalability.
  • M – Motherboards designed for micro-ATX and mini-ITX form factors.
  • A – Motherboards designed for AMD-based platforms.

Example: In X12SPA-T, "X" denotes a workstation/server motherboard.

Chipset and Generation Identifier

Chipset and Generation Identifier (Numbers Following the Prefix)

The numbers following the series prefix indicate the motherboard’s chipset generation and compatibility:

  • 12 – 12th-generation Intel or AMD motherboard, typically supporting the latest processors.
  • 11 – 11th-generation motherboard.
  • 10 and below – Older generations.

Example: The "12" in X12SPA-T means it belongs to the 12th generation of motherboards, compatible with Intel Xeon Scalable processors.

Form Factor and Socket Type Indicators

Supermicro includes additional letters that signify the motherboard’s form factor and CPU socket type:

  • S – Standard ATX motherboard.
  • M – Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX motherboard.
  • D – Dense motherboards optimized for compact deployments.
  • T – Motherboards designed with extended PCIe expansion slots.
  • L – Large extended ATX (E-ATX) form factor.

Example: H12SSL-NT—"H" denotes a high-performance server motherboard, "12" signifies the 12th generation, and "SSL" indicates an ATX layout with high scalability.

Special Feature Codes

Special Feature Codes (Suffix Letters)

Supermicro motherboard model names often include additional suffix letters that indicate specific features:

  • F – Integrated IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) for remote management.
  • T – High-performance networking capabilities (10GbE or higher).
  • N – Includes advanced networking options (such as multiple Ethernet ports).
  • P – Supports additional PCIe slots for expandability.
  • D – Integrated storage controllers or optimized for dense server configurations.

Example: The "NT" in H12SSL-NT suggests that the motherboard includes advanced networking features and an extended form factor.
