1) Click the 3 lines on the top left corner of Acrobat Reader
2) Click "Disable new Acrobat Reader"
3) Restart Acrobat Reader
4) Go to Edit > Preferences
5) Now you are able to uncheck "Open documents as new tabs in the same Window" in the General tab
6) Restart Acrobat Reader

When such a field has the focus and the Properties Bar (Ctrl+E) is displayed, the user is allowed to select some text and choose a font, font size, etc.
