- on ball
- off ball
- don't just be a ball watcher
- have thick skin - stick with your call
- make call and close in
- strong whistle
- fox query whistle
- it's all about angles, be off to the side, not straight on
- need ref shirt, black pants, black shoes, whistle on lanyard
- blow whistle - raise hand
- open hand - violation or stop clock
- closed fist - foul
- normally clock stops when hand goes up
- but some games will not be able to stop the clock
- NBA is a business - not real basketball
- "legal guarding position" can move
- when calling a ball (carry) does player have advantage?
- verticallity - you have your space vertically straight up
- no call
- have to be displaced to call a foul
- double whistle (jinx) - lead will take
- talk in pregame about how you will call
- travel rule - people understand it
- allows for layups
- basketball is a limited-contact sport (contact results in fouls)
- there can be no foul without contact
- you cannot travel while dribbling
- get officials manual
- moving screen
- not illegal until someone runs into it
- to clean up game:
- illegal screen - space of your shoulders is yours
- hand check
- our job is to keep players safe
- preventative referring
- advantage/disadvantage
- "blue get out of key"
- when counting don't be faster than the clock
- don't backpedal, you will trip
- no rule for reaching in verticality (??)
- you have 10 seconds to bring ball across center
- kick ball has to be intentional
- has to be displaced
- can't play defense with hand, has to be arm
- can strike ball out of hand
- offensive fouls, never a shot
- free throw administration
- last contact determines who gets ball on out
- free throws lineup (behind block and line now)
- look at table for sub
- touching line is back court
- crossing again - back court violation
- your position is determined where your feet last touched the hard wood
- out ball triangle "out of bounds" - triangle starts at top of key circle.
- above triangle goes to side
- below triangle goes to back
- 3rds rule (??)
- not AT&T calls - reach out and touch someone
- pay attention to clock
- 1 minute between quarters
- fouls:
- intentional foul (personal foul)
- deliberate foul
- flagrant foul (booted from game)
- free throw
- 1, 2 or 3 shots
- technical foul is at center, throw in
- is all about intent
- tail - working the arc
- "you've earned my undivided attention"
- be decisive
- if you don't see the ball go out, jumpball, only do it once though
- if the "T" needs to be used, use it, but only if needed (technical foul)
- you've got the best seat in the house
- church ball
- no dunking
- flagrant technical foul
- protect equipment
