Sand Mountain: A wall of sand climbing nearly 700 feet high provides the ultimate challenge to rider and machine. This is the prime-time focal point for hill climbing.

White Sands Dunes: Easy access to dunes and plentiful riding bowls attract riders of all abilities to this spot on the north end of the recreation area.

Dunes southwest of Black Mountain: Low-lying dunes provide good terrain for beginners or for those who just want to get away from the crowds.

Two options to get to Sand Dunes:

  • Nephi route (more I15 road)
  • Sanaquin/Eurika route

Map It or Lose It!

Map It or Lose It!

The Forest Service's nationwide trail-inventory program, now under way, can help off-road riders get official recognition for their favorite trails. And the first step ion that process is mapping the trails that currently exist. Don't know where to begin? Not to worry -- the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council, the Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Coalition and videographer Lloyd Liebetrau of L&M Productions can help.

With the blessing of Forest Service officials, they are collaborating on a DVD that explains how to use global positioning systems to map trails in a form that can be transferred to official maps. The DVD will offer a step-by-step guide to riding your favorite trails, marking waypoints on the GPS map, and turning that information in to local forest managers. "It's critical that off-highway vehicle recreationists are involved in letting the Forest Service know where they ride," says Russ Ehnes, NOHVCC executive director, "because if they ride on a trail, and that trail doesn't make it into the Forest Service inventory, the trail will be closed."

The EVD is available to anyone who needs to map trails or roads for any land-use process. To get a DVD, contact NOHVCC at (800) 3486487, or e-mail trailhead@nohvcc.org.
